Kenya's people are, according to the United Nations, one of the most struggling populations in the world. With a population of approximately 36.6 million and an annual population growth of approximately 2.6%, the country's poverty index has also continued to steadily rise.
The present water crisis in Naromoru, Kenya is the result of three things:
- Less than normal rainfall over the last 2 years
- Illegal abstraction of water from our rivers.
- Inadequate water harvesting and water storage and mismanagement of water for agriculture.
The desire for
Baraka CCC has been to come up with a model farm that is sustainable for
demonstration purpose as well us income generating.
But since ever eroot programs was incorporated there has
been a lot of struggles leading to the failure of the project due to various
challenges but mainly insufficient water supply that can
sustain the crops up to the harvesting stage.
Due to the climate change the area is receiving
approximately an average of 800mm annual rainfall, the temperatures are high in
the months of January to March.
The area receives two rainy seasons being long rains that is
experienced in March to May and
short rains in the months of October to
December.
The area is surrounded with several seasonal streams and one
river (Tigithi River) that draws water from Mt. Kenya but the supply is not
sufficient due to increased population.
From the research that was done before the borehole proposal,
was that people leaving in the surrounding community require about 20 cubic
meters of water for domestic purposes.
The outcome of research made us push for the drilling of the
borehole and after writing several proposals to our regional and international
office in Canada since the year 2014, we are happy to inform that our prayers
were answered at the end of 2016 last year and we started the proceedings early
in this year 2017. We were allowed to
proceed with the drilling of the borehole after fulfilling all the
requirements.
The water is going to help the surrounding community
especially the schools for supplementing water especially during the drought
period.
We will also be able to sustain our demonstration farm and
even upgrade it to a higher standards, the water will also facilitate
agri-business trainings and help our community members have alternative farming
methods that will help them fight food insecurity.
Through the microfinance groups the group members will use
water for farming and they will be able to mobilize funds through the farm
sells for their own developments.
On behalf of
Baraka CCC and the entire community, I with the entire community take this opportunity
to appreciate all those who took part and had their time to see to it. It was successful,
especially our dear sponsors for raising funds that made the project run
smoothly.
We have nothing to offer other than praying for you so that
the Almighty God give you strengths and blessings with long healthy life.
Great work
